Something's Lurking in the Shadows

Hey there painteholics,

I know I am low on postings nowadays but my final exams still continue until end of january I am pretty busy atm. But something in the world wide web caught my attention and I wanted to write a little article about it.

Some of you might know that I am not only a painter but a passionate tournament player aswell. Now during the last years it became normal for most players to see tyranids as the very end of the food chain. Also the tyranid situation got a little better with 6th Edition most people dont sees the bugs as a competitive army.

The army lists are almost everytime the same:

1 or 2 primes -> check
6-9 Hive Guards -> check
2-3 Tervigons -> check
Termagaunts -> check

But a pretty unexpected thing happened during the North Guard Challenge some days ago. Fenneq, a well known tournament player and part of the 40kings community managed to take the first place on the NGC with a pretty unusual tyranid list. This all started a quite nice discussion about the current Meta and the place of the bugs in the food chain, about innovative lists, players thoughts etc.
You can check out and join the discussion here if you want to.

After all he managed to win with a list that is pretty damn weak on paper. Of course you can argue that fenneq is a skilled player but I think there is more to it than that. After all I think this win could inspire some of us to take new roads, try different things and look for new playstyles to maybe get around the current meta.

I wanted to take this road and this is what I came up with. Sorry its just in german. I have to tell you that this list is designed to be played on a tournament where I can pick psychic powers and the warlod trait free. I can also ally with myself.

Gesamtpunkte Tyraniden : 1849

Looks pretty weak on the first view but the playstyle is important. I just give the enemy way to many unimportant things to shoot at. But in a whole its pretty hard if everything charges in at once. And here is how you achieve this.

My prime is the warlord and gets the first turn nightfighting ability. This gives all my bugs +2 on cover saves or are simply not targetable at over 36". He joins the 20 gaunts to be a big tarpit unit with a pretty high damage output and good durability due to FeelNoPain. (FNP)

The Zoantrophes can all four cast FNP or give one enemy unit -1S and -1T at 24". This provides FNP backup or weakens an enemy squad when needed. Both broods have the gate of infinity psychic power to get out of trouble if needed.

The Ymgarl Stealers will charge on the turn they arrive to bound firepower of the enemy army. Its vital to get them into CC so the enemy will be locked in CC. More on this later.

Both Stealer broods are there for one thing: get a big, bad broodlord with ironarm. With +W3 on S/T and get eternal warrior is pretty good. And one is able to give the 20 man strong gargoyle brood a 5++ save  and the backfire ability withing inches.  Together with FNP support, those 20 gargs become a pretty strong thread. But there are not in there for damage output. They shall charge as many enemy squads then possible. more on this later.

The Raverners are damage dealers. They lack durability but if they charge into a ongoing CC they wont have to strike at InI 1 and are able to do a solid damage output.

Alongside an Aegis line to give proper cover saves this list provides multiple units to overload the enemy firebase. The Plan is to get the gargs and the ymgarls into CC fast and to get other units behind the aegis line. Then a big charge follows which ignores Ini mali.

I will test this list and maybe write a little article about it :D Let me here what you think,

Simon
